This remarkable map is from Homann’s “Grosser Atlas über die ganze Welt.” It depicts the Northern Hemisphere, notably portraying California as an island. The actual map resembles a clock face, surrounded by Roman numerals and zodiac signs, indicating the times of sunrise and sunset for any given day in the Northern Hemisphere. Explanatory German text is featured on either side of the clock.
This artwork masterfully integrates an intricately detailed map with a vintage clock, elegantly addressing the age-old challenge of determining longitude. This issue was particularly significant for navigators in the 18th century, when precise measurements of time and position were crucial for successful maritime exploration. The harmonious fusion of cartography and timekeeping not only showcases artistic brilliance but also highlights the ingenuity required to navigate the vast, uncharted seas of that era.
Originally published in 1705, this is the second edition, which notes Homann’s membership in the Königlich Preußische Sozietät der Wissenschaften, to which he was elected in 1715.
