copper engraved map with recent hand colouring; plate 26 x 41 cm. some slight toning and foxing; o/w vg cond.
From an unknown source, this map depicts the Grand Tour through Spain, taken by young English noble men and women of the 17th and 18th century who often spent some years travelling through Europe, broadening their knowledge of foreign culture, language, arts, architecture and geography.
The term was coined in the late 17th century by Richard Lassles, as mentioned in his travel book ‘The Voyage of Italy, or a Compleat Journey through Italy’. Subsequent travel books and tour guides were published, and the tourist industry was founded and developed to meet the evergrowing needs of young male and female travellers.
