2 colour lithographed maps with some recent handcolouring; overall 55 x 67 cm each, image 50 x 61 cm each. folds as issued; small split in lower c’fold and some abrasions in c’fold of Northern sheet; o/w excellent cond.

A beautiful and very clean map, showing the geology and palaeontology of the British Isles. From Johnston’s ‘The Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena’, first printed in 1848. This is from the 2nd edition, published in 1856 but dated in red ink at the bottom of each sheet ‘1st March 1854’.

The map is decorated with depictions of geological features, palaeontological deposits, fossils, various insets with explanatory tables and a colour reference table at the bottom of the Southern sheet.
