copper engraved map, overall 47 x 59 cm, plate 34 x 44 cm, fold as issued, some worm holes, nice patina, some printer’s creases, impurity in paper, o/w vg cond. French text on verso.
A beautifully engraved map of Japan by Mercator, published in Hondius’ Atlas Sive Cosmographia, baseed on Ortelius earlier map. The map is decorated with a large fish and 2 ships, an elaborate cartouche and vignette, and it shows Japan and Corea with parts of China.
