Description
Hole, William (? – 1624) Scotia Regnum
London 1610
copper engraved map; overall 31 x 38 cm, plate 26 x 31 cm. fold as issued; some marginal tears; some slight discolouration; o/w vg cond.
A very attractive and early map of Scotland by William Hole, published in William Camden’s Britannia. First edition in 1607 with Latin text.
The map is based on Mercator’s map of Scotland of 1595 and was later amended by Speed’s ‘Kingdom of Scotland’.
Camden’s Britannia was first published in 1586 and documents British history from Roman times onwards. But it was not until the 1607 edition, shortly before Camden’s death, that maps of English and Welsh counties as well as maps of Scotland and Ireland were included which makes this map the first one to show a separate Scotland.
